Virginia-Highland mainstay Murphy's restaurant is turning 25 this year, and founder/owner Tom Murphy has written a cookbook to mark the occasion.

Murphy's opened in 1980 as a delicatessen/gourmet cheese shop that Murphy created as part of a class assignment during his senior year at Georgia State University.

Over the years, the eatery has become a staple neighborhood joint in Virginia-Highland that helped advance the careers of several of Atlanta's best-known chefs, such as Michael Tuohy of Woodfire Grill, Alon Balshan of Alon's Bakery and Market, Gerry Klaskala of Aria, Shaun Doty of MidCity Cuisine and Hector Santiago of Pura Vida, to name a few. The kitchen at Murphy's is currently run by Chef Nick Oltarsh, formerly of New York City's Eleven Madison Park and Gramercy Tavern.

Murphy said a constantly updated menu and periodic renovations have kept the restaurant relevant.

"You have to keep in touch with the clientele and give them what they want and be willing to change as their tastes change," Murphy said.

Murphy's will hold a progressive cocktail party Oct. 26 to mark the 25th anniversary, with proceeds going to support anti-hunger charity Share Our Strength. The as-yet unnamed cookbook, which will include recipes and recollections from current and former chefs, will be published in September.
