Perkins+Will Purchases 100% Green Power
Sustainable architecture + design firm embarks on renewable energy initiative
ergy
ATLANTA, (January 9, 2006) -- National sustainable design firm Perkins+Will has announced a new initiative, effective January 1, 2006, to purchase 100% green power for its North American office locations from Renewable Choice Energy's ( www.renewablechoice.com ) green power program. This program subsidizes the generation of renewable energy sources that make cleaner energy available to all consumers. Perkins+Will is recognized as a leader in sustainable design and has embarked on several groundbreaking programs to improve the operational performance of its offices, to set industry standards and to lessen the firm's impact on the environment.
The certified Renewable Energy Certificate program makes it possible for any business, anywhere in the country to offset their power consumption with renewable energy. Perkins+Will's buildings continue to use electricity from their local utility, which delivers energy from the North American "grid" from a mixture of sources. By buying Renewable Energy Certificates for the buildings, the firm is ensuring that energy gets put back onto the grid and that this energy comes from new, cleaner sources.
"It is an operationally stable way to make a huge environmental impact," said Phil Harrison, CEO of Perkins+Will. "The investment we're making with Renewable Choice Energy goes to support wind turbines. The electricity generated then goes onto the grid for others to use. It helps us with efficiency while supporting our culture of environmental sustainability."
Renewable Choice Energy provides renewable energy certificates sourced 100% from wind energy. Wind power offers a clean, cost effective alternative to the conventional production of electricity via the burning of fossil fuels, which the Environmental Protection Agency states is the leading cause of industrial air pollution. By offsetting 100% of electricity used with American Wind(TM), Perkins+Will will avoid the creation of 4.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide air pollution in 2006. This is equivalent to not driving a car over 4.8 million miles or planting 606 acres of trees. Additionally, Renewable Choice Energy will be offering a month of free wind power to all 1,000 Perkins+Will employees for their home electricity use. This will increase the firm's environmental impact by avoiding an additional 1,044,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.
"Perkins+Will has shown foresight that the decisions made today will effect generations to come. By purchasing American Wind for their buildings, their company is ensuring a brighter, cleaner future for us all," said Quayle Hodek, CEO of Renewable Choice Energy. "American Wind is now available anywhere in the country for individuals, companies and institutions looking for an alternative to fossil fuels."
Renewable Choice Energy is the leading grassroots energy company. The company is working with architects, designers and building owners to bring affordable green power to buildings nationwide. American Wind is Green-e certified, meeting the highest environmental and consumer protection standards. Wind power is the fastest growing source of energy in the country. Each time an electricity user chooses American Wind, the mix of energy in the national grid becomes cleaner for everyone. Visit www.renewablechoice.com to learn how wind power can work for you.
