My Days Are Numbered

by Chris Schroder

Chris Schroder

In 1982, when I worked for the newspapers in Greenville, SC, I not only labored in the newsroom — writing, editing and designing the pages of the daily papers — I also walked the streets of my neighborhood just a few hundred yards north of downtown on North Main Street, delivering the paper to readers’ front steps.

As I carefully dropped the paper at my customers’ front doors, I remember being puzzled by the few neighbors — and there were only very few — who did not subscribe to either the morning or afternoon paper. I would drop off a sample copy with a handwritten note, asking if I could start delivering them a daily paper. I was usually successful in my sales effort, though there were a few intransigent ones.

These days, I walk out my front door and grab three newspapers delivered at 6am to my front yard: the AJC, the Wall Street Journal and, on weekends, the New York Times. Each morning, I remember that I am participating in a dying ritual, and it saddens me. My days are numbered...

Who's On First? - Branding To Stake Your Position In Down Economy

by Jennifer Sheran

My phone rang in late spring of 2008. It was a local architecture firm inquiring about what we could do to help them rebrand their business. This was the fifth in perhaps a dozen or more calls our firm had received from clients looking to build a stronger brand in what I call the year of branding for Schroder PR. While I could be surprised to get a call from companies whose industries haven taken a big hit in the current economy, in reality I am impressed. I am impressed because these executives know that it will be the brands with the most recognition and equity that will be on the forefront of the economic rebound. They know that building a solid brand takes time and effort and that there is no better time to build a brand than now.

HGOR in ABCOne firm that truly understands the value of building a solid brand is planning and landscape architecture firm HGOR. Hughes, Good, O’Leary and Ryan approached Schroder PR about branding in late Spring of 2007, before the current economic crisis, as the firm embarked on its 15th year of business in Atlanta. This anniversary offered an opportunity to review the brand and make sure it was well positioned for the next generation.

Our process began with Schroder PR participating in a joint branding process with a local marketing firm. We led the corporate identity assessment portion of the process, which involved extensive research and analysis of the company’s current state and future goals, and worked collaboratively with the marketing firm to brainstorm the final brand position...

Media Relations

There Are Two Sides To Every Issue

by Amber Rigsby

readingIt was early November. I was scanning through the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Sunday edition looking for story ideas, and came across a section called Pro-Con on the second page of the Business Section.

The piece featured a question with two guest writers either agreeing or disagreeing with the topic at hand. It was the first week the piece had run, so I instantly flagged it as a great opportunity for clients.

During a media meeting later that morning, I pointed it out and told the team I would be emailing the editor Tom Sabulis to see if he needed any help.

It turns out he did.

Our firm immediately brainstormed topic ideas, and so far our results have paid off. We have been responsible for 14 Sunday editions of the Pro-Con. In total, 19 clients have made an appearance in Pro-Con, some more than once.

The lesson of this story is simple: Although Pro-Con features only about two paragraphs of copy, it establishes clients as “experts” because the paper profiles their opinion on national and local headlines.

I would like to thank the following clients for their help — sometimes on short notice — with our 14-week run thus far:

All About Developmental Disabilities, Atlanta Fine Homes, Balfour Beatty Construction, Bovis Lend Lease, Childspring International, Colonial Properties Trust, Creech Custom Builders, DPR Construction, Fifth Street Management Company, Grove Street Partners, HGOR, Lenbrook, Massell Real Estate, Massie Knight, Norris Broyles, One Georgia Bank, Resource Marketing, Rubicon, Songy Partners, The Loring Group and VeinInnovations.

Our firm is continuing our search for topics in Pro-Con that relate to our clients. In the coming weeks if we contact you with a Pro-Con opportunity and you have previously passed on it, or not given it much thought, we urge you to reconsider.

paperWith the recent changes to the newspaper’s format, space is limited and it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure media hits in the Sunday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution.There is no better way to get your name and brand out in the community than to be featured in the most-read edition of the week. Congrats to all of our clients who have participated. Let’s keep it going!
